Fly Fishing Instruction Blog

Bit late posting this month , so much fishing so little time!! So here is a summary of the month

My first trip out for the month was to the Little River Avon a beautiful little trout and grayling stream that sits on the edge of the Cotswolds. I was accompanied for the afternoon by a good friend and fellow club member. When I arrived there was very little flow to the river, this was to hinder the stealthy approach to our fly fishing. One gentle step in a pool sent a ripple upstream that looked like it would send all the trout and grayling in the river scurrying for cover. When the river is little over a meter wide there is little that can be done about this but to enter the pool and wait it out until the fish start rising again then cast as gently as can be as any disturbance be keenly felt by the fish through their lateral lines.

All in all fish where some what scarce with only a couple trout an a few grayling being caught by either of us, Oh Well that’s fly fishing in August

Well its now well into August and the Fly fishing has indeed been poor but not for the usual reason of very low water in fact the opposite has been true with a vast amount of rain filling our rivers fly fishing has not been possible. I hope there will be some improvement soon as by the 12th August we had had 11mm of rain more than the monthly average.

Had an appointment to fish for trout on the Bridge meadow beat of the Usk today. Guess what it was a total wash out.

24th August 2008

Visiting some friends who live on the banks of the Tiegn just below Fingle Bridge I managed an hour or two on their water, it was still very high and incredibly fast as it was just falling from one of the biggest spates it had had for a while. I did manage a couple of trout around ten inches but it was hard going so called it a day early.
