Start of the 2008 trout season

23rd March 2008

Well with the 2008 trout fishing season well and truly under way you may be thinking that its a bit late for the first entry in this months blog and you would be right.

It all started or should I say finished at the start of the month when my computer suffered a catastrophic failure of apparently all systems. As is always the way with these things they did not all go at once but through a series of slow and painful death twitches with enough time between each one to allow me the false hope that I had fixed the problem and was ready to go. This inevitably lead to a catastrophic sense of humor failure in myself. The only cure for this was a severe session of retail therapy in a computer shop followed by hours of endless telephone calls to India and the tech support guys.

Ahh well finally all fixed up and back online.

Fly fishing for early season Brown Trout.

With March living up to a more normal pattern of weather fishing time has been limited to the few days between floods and even then there has been a fair bit of wind to contend with...

So the first trip out of the season coincided with the AGM for Charfield. One of the Angling associations I belong to.

To be fair it was more of a token effort as it was nearly dark when arrived at the LRA. I saw a fish rising and decided to have a cast at it however in my haste to catch the first trout of the season I fluffed it with the most appallingly presented cast. Ce la vie. by the time I had recovered from this it was time to pack up and head of to the AGM.

My next trip out was to the River Usk. I fished a section down stream of Abergavenny called Bridge Meadow available through the Wye and Usk Foundation.
I really enjoyed the day even though fish were few and far between. The wind was blowing hard and the river was still carrying a lot of extra water. it was far to cold to get the camera out. I was not to perturbed by this as it is more about being out so early in the season, that is not to say that a trout of two are not welcome. The river here is nice and wide and although it is not the longest of beats it has plenty to keep you occupied for the day .It also has great access to the river, nice for those lunch time picnics

Ahh!! Fly fishing on the Monnow system again.

Tuesday the 18th saw me out on the Monnow, well the Honndu to be exact.

The wier on the Honndu tributary of the Monnow

As you can see it is a rather well oxygenated bit of water. I had a really great day fishing this new beat available through the passport scheme of the Wye and Usk Foundation .
The Day was full of sport with all the fish coming to A heavy GRHE despite fishing a leader of three flies; GRHE on the point with a size 18 PTN on the middle dropper and a small black and peacock on the top dropper.

The best of the day

After a while I took the other flies of my leader and just fished the point fly.

There was quite a difference in the markings of the fish I caught. As this one demonstrates. large spotted brown trout

Here is another just to prove the point.

Blog submissions will be published after I have had a chance to review their content.
