3rd February 2008

While the trout season is approaching the weather has not really been that conducive to fly fishing for any species. So I have been filling my time with working on a construction site in Swansea. The advantage of this is that as the trout season gets closer I am anticipating it with a greater fervor than usual. Which indeed is saying something. the disadvantage is that Swansea is a long way from the Forest of Dean leaving me no time mid week for fly tying or any other pre-season preparation work. All it really leaves me time for mid week is eating and sleeping.

I also became aware while thinking of a title for this page that we have to wait an extra day for the Trout season to start this year. Still its only one more day and this disappointment pales in to insignificance by the excitement cause by the approaching season.

Fly fishing trip on the Monnow

Finally had both the time on the weather to get out on the Monnow System. The first part of the morning was a casting lesson with DanC from the fly forum.

Here is what he thought of the day.

I can highly recommend Frank Williams as an instructor having spent most of the day with him on the Honddu and Monnow. It didn't take him long to correct a few misdemeanors and give me a few pointers on understanding the mechanics of the casting process. I found Frank to be very friendly, approachable and helpful. A real nice guy who also brews a good cup of tea!! Well worth a visit if you're looking for an instructor in the Gloucestershire area.

A couple of pictures from the day

fly fishing on the Monnow, drifting nymphs down the current seam of a confluence pool

After we had done some work on Dan's casting it was time to get busy with some fishing.

lovely Grayling fron the confluence of the Monnow and the Honndu caught on a GRHE

The river was good and clear if carrying a little extra water. Other than the Grayling pictured above the fish I caught were all brown trout. All of which were returned quickly and with out removing from the water hence no pictures.

Blog submission.

Feel free to delete this daddy , but well done for getting your website on the first page! oh and I love the pictures of Ieuan.
On a more seriously note I recommend letting my dad teach you to fish because he is the best (no, unfortunately he didn't pay me to write that) :) well he taught me the basics so he must be pretty good :P au revoir

Czech nymphing on the River Taff

Well what a day. Went up the Taff for the day. All was going well until I neared the motorway exit , when all the traffic came to complete stand still.
I waited in the traffic for a couple of hours turned of the junction only to be directed straight back on to the motorway. After another hour I made it to the next junction and headed off on the back roads.
As a small aside it infuriates me when maps are not accurate so boding around the back lanes for another hour trying to find the river with a useless map and my sense of smell.

I got there in the end with only a couple of hours of light left.
Set my self up with a czech style leader with three nymphs , a Hydropsche, a Rycopilla and a GB sedge emerger and off I went.

Was it worth the hassle of the traffic, excuse the language but, dam right.
It was one of the most exciting Grayling sessions I have ever had.
All the fish caught wher of a cracking size nothing under 30cm. and plenty of them too.

Here is a picture of the only fish caught in a position where I could get a picture. Even then I had to hold it while it possed as I did not want to put the fish down on a concrete wall.

A fine Grayling caught in the River Taff
